Triple Talaq Outlawed in India

‘Triple Talaq’ is a practice amongst Muslims in India by which a man can instantly divorce his wife simply by saying ‘divorce’ three times in Arabic.

For years, women’s rights group have protested the practice. According to The Guardian, it has now been outlawed by India’s Supreme Court.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the decision from his Twitter account, calling it a ‘powerful measure for women empowerment’.

India’s 90 women’s rights activists were pleased to hear the news. Zakia Soman is the co-founder of the Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan, a group that was integral to the legal battle. She called it “a very happy day”. “We, the Muslim women, are entitled to justice from the courts as well as the legislature”, she said.
